34*AN INDONESIAN WOMAN WAS ARRESTED

Man critical after vicious mob attack
By Marianna Pissa

A 25-YEAR-OLD Pakistani man was yesterday fighting for his life after suffering a vicious attack at the hands of a mob in Nicosia on Sunday night. The man was rushed to Nicosia General Hospital, where doctors found his skull had been fractured. The man’s condition is considered to be critical.

Police say the 25-year-old was attacked by several people, most probably compatriots, in a block of flats in Nicosia. According to testimony, the attackers repeatedly battered the victim’s head with iron bars and wooden planks.

A search was carried out at the scene of the incident and evidence was collected for examination. Police also searched the victim’s apartment, where they found five foreigners (two men and three women), who did not have any documents that could prove their identity. They were taken to the offices of Nicosia CID for verification of their documents.

Yesterday, a woman from Indonesia was arrested in connection with the case, and in her possession several false passports and other documents were found.

The police issued an arrest warrant against three Pakistani men, 30-year-old Shahid Mehmood, 27-year-old Khalid Sahi Mohsan Bilal, and Fahid Abrarsahi also 27. All are wanted by police to assist their investigation.

33*DOCTORS-PATIENTS

Patients suffer as doctors pushed to the brink
By Alexia Saoulli

PUBLIC doctors who examine over 30 patients in a single day do so at the detriment of their patients, PASYKI president Dr Stavros Stavrou said yesterday.

Any medic who examined more than that was not practicing medicine.

“Doctors who see 65 patients a day are deceiving them,” he said.

The government doctors’ union chief blamed successive governments’ failure to properly structure the health service, allowing it to operate more smoothly.

“Doctors’ tolerance [of this state of affairs] is unacceptable. General practitioners should spend at least eight to 10 minutes with each patient, but if they are seeing 65 patients in a day then they are just about managing to say good morning, sign a prescription, and that’s it,” he said.

Stavrou said if the Health Ministry was insistent on blaming delays on red tape and bureaucracy then it should come out and say so and not force doctors to shoulder the responsibility of offering insufficient healthcare. “The lack of equipment at district hospitals is well known. The mechanisms to purchase these have repeatedly been reported by PASYKI,” he said.

Stavrou outlined the union’s complaints at a news conference yesterday. He said PASYKI had decided not to give the new government much leeway to shape up the health service.

“We’ve already met with the Health Minister and hope he will take our position into consideration. We are still waiting for his response… We will never go on strike and keep our hospitals closed, but there are many other ways we can get our point across. First and foremost we can tell the patients how things really stand and we will not be gagged,” he said.

Stavrou said every time a new Finance Minister took over, he announced a freeze in public appointments, except for doctors and nurses. He said if this was supposed to solve the government’s problems, it would not. “Maybe some services are overstaffed. Maybe some of our services are also overstaffed. They should look at it. Perhaps they are. We don’t think so though, because there are a lot of staff deficiencies and a lot of equipment needs to be supplemented too,” he said.

Stavrou said the union had a list as long as its arm with problems dating back as far as Glafcos Clerides’ presidency more than a decade ago.

Among these problems was the government’s insistence on purchasing health services at very expensive rates from the private sector, as well as the dissolution of existing services after the government failed to structure them properly. Specifically Stavrou referred to the collapse of the paediatric cardiology department at Nicosia’s Makarios hospital. Finally, any innuendos that the union was opposed to the creation of a Medical School were a blatant lie, he said.

“This is completely untrue. We will help towards making this happen and anyone who says otherwise should not dare repeat it,” he said.

Payah tuh dokter...
Lebih payah lagi... kalau nga ada pasien (???).

Tambah kaciannya, tiap nulis resep obat kok untuk dimakan selama 7 hari. Tapi diharuskan kembali lagi dalam 2-3 hari, lalu ........................
ganti lagi obatnya!!!!

Makanya kalau jadi PASIEN, baiknya jangan ditebus semua itu obat.. tapi setengahnya aja ya... Kecuali kalau ingin jadi kolektor obat :-))

Zalimnya umat-Mu (kami-kami ini) ya Rabb...

32*KOK GURU DISAMAKAN MONYET

Penulis: Edi Saputra HS, S.Pd

Kok Guru Disamakan Monyet
